Manchester United ended Crystal Palace’s nine-month unbeaten Premier League run at Selhurst Park with a 2-1 comeback win on Sunday, thanks to second-half goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount.
Jean-Philippe Mateta had given Palace the lead from the spot in the 36th minute after Leny Yoro’s reckless tackle, converting at the second attempt after his first effort was ruled out for a double touch. United, sluggish in the first half and still scarred from their limp 1-0 defeat to Everton earlier in the week, looked headed for another long night on the road.
The momentum flipped after the break. Zirkzee, starting in place of the injured Matheus Cunha, levelled in the 54th minute with his first league goal in almost a year — chesting down a free-kick and burying his finish from a tight angle past Dean Henderson. Nine minutes later, Mount capped United’s revival with a low strike through a forest of legs after a cleverly worked free-kick routine.
The win — only United’s second in 12 away matches — lifts them to sixth place on 21 points, nudging Palace down to seventh. It also marked a noticeable shift in intensity, with manager Ruben Amorim admitting that his side found “another gear” once Palace began to tire after a heavy run of fixtures.
Palace, who also fell 2-1 to Strasbourg in the Europa League on Thursday, showed signs of fatigue and frustration. Oliver Glasner lamented conceding “three of our last four goals from free kicks” and said his squad’s energy levels “were not top after the tight schedule.”
There was late encouragement for United with Lisandro Martínez making his first appearance since tearing knee ligaments in Feb, coming off the bench in the final minutes to close out the victory.
